HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

96 THE MAN WHO BELIEVED GOD
inforced by some of the Bridge Street Christians. It was
a new experience for all, and a trial of faith was to precede
the glad experience of salvation.
The supplies in hand daily decreased, and at length,
when the last bag of rice was reached, the wolf came to
their ve:ry door. But prayer like incense was sent up
"To God the strong, God the beneficent,
God ever mindful in all strife and strait,
Who, for our own good, makes the need extreme,
Till at last He puts forth might and saves."
And then they saw God working for them, as they
waited for Him. A letter arrived from Mr. Berger in England
with a cheque for £50. But that was not all. The
letter went on to state that the writer had recently lost
his father, that he had inherited his property, that he
did not purpose to increase his personal expenditure,
could his friend in China tell him how some of this
wealth could be used for God's glory? Truly "there is
none like unto the Lord our God!"
After a season of thanksgiving with his wife, Hudson
Taylor called the Chinese workers together and translated
to them the letter. We can almost now hear their
exclamations Ai Ya? What a lesson in faith, and in
God's faithfulness! What a demonstration that the old
message, "Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of
the Lord", is still applicable in the straits of human experience!
"I need not say", wrote Hudson Taylor, "how rejoiced
they were, and that we praised God together. They returned
to their work in the hospital with overflowing hearts, and
told out to the patients what a God was ours, appealing tp
them whether their idols had ever helped them so. Both
helpers and patients were spiritually blessed through this
remarkable provision."
