HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

out in Jerusalem. <strong>God</strong> gives His Spirit not to those <strong>who</strong> long<br />

for Him, not to those <strong>who</strong> pray for Him, nor to those <strong>who</strong><br />

desire to be filled always, but He does give His Holy Spirit<br />

to them that obey Him."<br />

<strong>The</strong> idea of an appeal for no less than a thousand<br />

new evangelists was eaniestly commended to the Conference,<br />

and was adopted. And so the call went forth for<br />

One Thousand men within the next five years. And when<br />

the five years were past Hudson Taylor issued a little<br />

booklet to show what <strong>God</strong> had wrought. One thousand<br />

We might well bring this chapter to a close at this<br />

peace had been signed between China and Japan in<br />

1895, he urged another advance.<br />

"An important crisis in China's history has been reached",<br />

he wrote. "<strong>The</strong> war just terminated does not leave her where<br />

she stood. It will inevitably lead to a still wider opening of<br />

the Empire, and to <strong>man</strong>y new developments .... In view of<br />

the new facilities and enlarged claims of China, the next five<br />

years should see a larger reinforcement than that called for<br />

in 1890."<br />

"A larger reinforcement than that called for in 1890!"<br />

And that had been for one thousand men! That there<br />

might be spiritual preparation on the field for such<br />

further expansion, he approached the Keswick Committee,<br />

in regard to the sending of a deputation to China<br />

that the spiritual life of the workers might be deepened<br />

and strengthened. But just as new workers, <strong>who</strong> had<br />

volunteered, were ready for advance, the Boxer outbreak<br />

burst upon the country, and ushered in, <strong>by</strong> fire<br />

and sword, a new era in all missionary· undertakings.<br />

By this time, however, Hudson Taylor, though as keen
