HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

THE MAN HIMSELF 207
"Before I left China last time this passage was made very
precious to me. But it wasn't till I got to Paris that I learned
the full preciousness of this clause. There I was met by my
beloved wife, and as we sat in the cab side by side, though
she had so much to say, and I had too, I could only take her,
hand and be silent. The joy was so unspeakable; and oh, it
came to me, if all this earthly affection is only a type, what
must it be when He is 'silent in His love'."
Few things did more, in the early days of the Mission,
to build up a body of friends and donors than the tone
and touch of his correspondence. One or two quotations
will be the best illustration of this. Writing of the deepening
of spiritual sympathy and loving interest on the
part of donors, he gave in China's Millions some specimens.
One or two of these we quote, with his comments.
"When you were in --", wrote one friend in Scotland,
"I heard you pleading for China, and you asked us to look
at home if there was anything we could give to forward the
cause of God. Well, I cannot at present send money, but I
have looked, and found the lace Maltese shawl-the gift of my
dear husband, now gone Home-which I will post at the
same time as this note, and which I hope you will accept for
the cause so dear to your heart."
"Need we say", wrote Hudson Taylor, "that our eyes
filled with tears-tears of joy-as we felt that Jesus stood
first in that loving heart? And we thought of the gladness of
His heart at that gift, so inexpressibly precious to the giver
-aye, and so inexpressibly precious to the true Receiver, the
Lord Jesus Christ."
Judging by this comment-and the few words quoted
above are only part of what he said~the reader will
believe that the letter acknowledging such a gift would
be full of rich appreciation. Then comes another letter,
enclosing 5s., asking that this small'sum be accepted for
the work.
