HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

LOVE TRIUMPHANT 79
these misfortunes mean? Why all these fruitless journeyings?
What lay behind God's mysterious dealings? But
there were good reasons why he should not go south, and
better reasons why he should remain north.
"Be not amazed at life; 'tis still
The mode of God with His elect,
Their hopes exactly to fulfil,
In times and ways they least expect."
This truth Hudson Taylor was to prove, but only by
passing through fire and water. When news came later
that the British had bombarded Canton, and then that
war had been declared, he recognised the wisdom and
the kindness which had blocked his path. And when in
Ningpo he met the woman whose love seemed countless
gain, he saw the loving Hand which had detained him in
the north. But his Eden was fenced in with apparently
insurmountable barriers. He could only acknowledge
God in all His ways, and trust Him to direct his paths.
And this he literally did, come rough, come smooth.
When he had been robbed and deserted on the road "
to Ningpo, he still sought first to preach Christ. He
speaks of feeling condemned for being anxious about his
lost belongings, and not more concerned for the lost state
of those around. Though so exhausted by lack of food,
by want of sleep, and by sheer physical fatigue as to
faint by the roadside, he only regained consciousness to
continue his witness for Christ. Literally he sought first
the things of God, and believing that God would not
fail to deliver him, he bade some interested Chinese observe
how God would come to his aid. So real was the
sense of God's presence that at times; though utterly
weary, he said "the road was almost forgotten", and
"sweet tears of mingled joy and sorrow flowed freely".
