HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

THE MAN WHO BELIEVED GOD
in this school of discipline, and their experience before
marriage helped them now.
"It was a marvel", wrote Mrs. Taylor, recalling that
time, "that my mind even was not poisoned against my dear
husband; and we could have no communication with one
another, so as to hear the other side. Yet God mercifully
kept us from being influenced by the aspersions; and
the remembrance of His past dealings must reassure us
now."
There was comfort also to be found in the experience
of Moses, the meekest of men, under similar provocation,
but more especially in the example of the
Master, "who when He was reviled, reviled not again;
when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed
Himself to Him that judgeth righteously". Hudson
Taylor's power quietly to wait at such times as these
brings out the strong contrast of his nature, his aggressive
spirit in the work of God, and his enduring spirit in
the realm of suffering. Patience is, as Chrysostom has
said, "the King of Virtues".
"Blessed Adversity" was Hudson Taylor's title to
an article he wrote in which he deals with trials of this
nature.
"The believer does not need to wait until he sees the
reason of God's afflictive dealings with him ere he is satisfied;
he knows that all things work together for good to them
that love God; that all God's dealings are those of a loving
Father, who only permits that which for the time being is
grievous in order to accomplish results that cannot be
achieved in al\Y less painful way. The wise and trustful child
of God rejoices in tribulation. . . . Our Heavenly Father
delights to trust a trustworthy child with a trial in which p.e
can bring glory to God, and through which he will receive
permanent enlargement of heart and blessing for himself
and others."
