HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

GOD, THE ONE GREAT CIRCUMSTANCE 95
fifty beds to close? And ~hat about the dispensary? Dr.
Parker urged Hudson Taylor to close the hospital but
continue the dispensary. But this was to raise some big
financial questions. Hitherto the expenses of that work
had been met by the proceeds of Dr. Parker's European
practice. This would now not be available, and the cost
of upkeep and maintenance was considerable. Yet to
close the hospital on these grounds alone would surely
be a lack of faith in God.
"Hath not God said", argued Hudson Taylor with himself,
sufficient."
To hold back on financial grounds, he felt, was nothing
less than doubting God. And it was to fail God at
a time of emergency. So he felt constrained to accept
responsibility, not for the dispensary only, but also for
the hospital. Eight days before he came to this decision
he had not had the remotest idea of such a call, still less
could his friends at home know. Yet funds were already
on their way to meet this unknown and unexpected /
need! Is not our God the God of Abraham, who called
the place of his trial Jehovah Jireh? "As it is said to this
day, In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided."
How God would provide, Hudson Taylor did not
know, but meanwhile he called together the hospital
assistants and explained to them the situation, stating
that he could not guarantee their salaries as Dr. Parker
had, but that he would welcome their fellowship if they
were prepared to trust God to supply their need, as he
did. The fearful and the trembling departed, as they did
from Gideon, and the remnant who remained were re-
