HUDSON TAYLOR The man who believed God by Marshall Broomhall

This book should be required reading for any and all future missionaries. Broomhall does the Christian world a great service by detailing Hudson Taylor's successes as well as his trials. The most remarkable feature of this book is the faith of Hudson Taylor. In the midst of incredible adversity this man abandoned himself to Jesus and the promises of Scripture. He rested solely on the provision of God, letting no man know his need. Throughout the book, Taylor's adversities and God's deliverances are a source of encouragement and inspiration that will lift the spirits of any true believer to "cast all your cares on Him because He cares for you." This book is an excellent read about a life well-lived and a spiritual journey of great depth.

228 THE MAN WHO BELIEVED GOD
document he left when finally laying down his great
responsibilities.
"If", he wrote, "the Directors and Members of the
Councils are godly and wise men, walking in the spirit of
unity and love, they will not lack Divine guidance in important
matters, and at critical times; but should another
spirit prevail, no rules can save the Mission, nor would it be
, worth saving. The China Inland Mission must be a living
body in fellowship with God, or it will be of no further use,
and cannot continue."
As the months came and went, and the years passed
by, it was not always easy to live that life of quiet and
seclusion, especially after having been for so long in the
thick of the fight. "It is hardest of all to do nothing for
would stand in his eyes, though he was still prepared for
all God's Will, whether it was to live unto the Lord, or
die unto Him.
Exercised one day about the comparative comfort
and leisure they were enjoying, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor
found consolation in that day's message in Daily Light:
"My people shall abide in a peaceful habitation, and in
sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places." And so they
gladly accepted what the Lord sent. And so Hudson
Taylor rejoiced in the beauty of the :flowers by day, and
in the glory of the stars by night. He had always been a
lover of Nature, and a pair of powerful binoculars, in
lieu of a telescope, made the study of the heavens more
delightful. Like the Psalmist who links the works and
word of God together, Hudson Taylor did the same. To
him the heavens declared the glory of God, and to him
God's word was more to be desired than gold, yea, than
much fine gold. And it was during these months in
Switzerland that he, for the fortieth time in forty years,
