ABOUT THE AUTHOR<br />

Lorenzo Cotula (lorenzo.cotula@iied.org) is Senior Researcher in Law and<br />

Sustainable Development at the International Institute <strong>for</strong> Environment and<br />

Development (IIED), based in the UK. His work focuses on the role of law in<br />

sustainable development, particularly in the areas of land/natural <strong>resource</strong><br />

rights, <strong>for</strong>eign investment, governance and human rights, and with a focus on<br />

Africa. Be<strong>for</strong>e joining IIED in 2002, Lorenzo worked on several assignments<br />

with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (<strong>Legal</strong> Office and Land<br />

Tenure Service) and with two Italian NGOs. He holds a Law Degree from the<br />

University “La Sapienza” of Rome and a Master in Development Studies from<br />

the London School of Economics. Besides working at IIED, he is undertaking a<br />

PhD at the School of Law of the University of Edinburgh.
