Iam particularly pleased that I have seen a pair ofMarsh Tits on my feeder at the black sunflowerseeds. It took a while to positively identify it asit is very similar to the Willow Tit but it was the‘pitchou-pitchou’ call that sealed it. We havealso seen song thrush, bullfinch, chaffinch,blackbird and many other songbirds althoughthe numbers have decreased as they spread outinto their breeding territories. Early onemorning I spent time listening and I was amazedat the number of woodpeckers hammering outtheir territorial messages. We try to manage thewood so there is there is good understorey toprovide the wildlife and birds with cover. If youdo spot any unusual birds, please let me know.I had a Facebook exchange with a member ofthe Wheeler family, native to Penn and TylersGreen. I was intrigued to hearthat he did not know the origin of the nameZacharias Pit which was named after hisgreat-great-grandfather who built St Margaret’sChurch. However he was able to give me aunique piece of information in that they calledthe Chalk Track, the Two Eyed Trail onaccount of 2 trees at the far end looked like eyeswhen viewing from the Rushmore end. He toldme that the track was used by the timber tractorsand had 2 long ruts either side for their wheelsand at the time the wood was private theyalways feared meeting the keeper.We are so lucky to have this woodlandfacility on our doorstep. One source of fundinghas dried up and we have some remedial worksneeded. I will have set up a ‘Go Fund Me ‘ pageto raise some money to repair a path and replacesome posts. The initial target is £700 but themore we get the more work we can do.
