SCHOOLSNEWS ROUND UPTylers Green Middle SchoolThe term 'unprecedented times' is one that hasbecome a common phrase for all of us and thepast months have both posed challenge andopportunity. As for the Middle School, I wouldlike to think that we have used our Compass ForLife to guide us through this period and we shallcontinue to draw upon this approach to supportus on our journey.Our staff have described the TGMS team asbeing like one family and just like each of you,they too have experienced the worries, isolationand loneliness that family members have feltover the past 2 months. Just like a family, staffhave been there to both support each other andimportantly our efforts as keyworkers.Each and everyone of our children areprecious individuals, thought about by theirteachers at TGMS and we miss seeing them,teaching them and talking to them. At the outset,we truly believed we would be back at schoolwithin a few weeks, but it soon became apparentthat our approach to learning required adapting.Initially trialling with one Year group, we knewwe had a secure digital education platform todeliver an effective programme of learning.What we have developed, over a very shorttimescale, is the use of google classroom acrossthe entire school, to support each of our 256www.pennandtylersgreen.org.ukVillage Voice June/July 2020pupils with Distance Learning. For childrenaged 7-11, we know that they quickly adapt tonew technology and importantly are able tolearn independently. What we had to ensure wasthat the platform was safe for pupils and staff,and gave parents and leadership confidence thatour pupils could work safely online.What is google classroom?Google Classroom makes teaching moreproductive and meaningful by streamliningassignments, boosting collaboration, andfostering communication. Educators can createclasses, distribute assignments, send feedback,and see everything in one place. Classroom alsoseamlessly integrates with other Google toolslike Google Docs and Drive.The importance of technology, providedthrough google and Microsoft, has beenrecognised by the Department for Educationand so the DfE have recently announcedadditional funding to assist schools in moving toa remote learning solution during the Covid-19lockdown. Unfortunately, (or fortunatelydepending on how you look at this), TGMS wasahead of the curve, and so we do not qualify forany grants.Our teachers shall continue to develop thecontent and ways in which we utilise thisplatform to support our pupils whilst they learnat home. What we all know is that this does notcompensate for having a qualified teacher andwhilst Distance Learning is here for some time,plans for our 'Recovery Curriculum' are neededto address the many missed months of learningby our pupils.It is an exciting time in June as we areexpecting to welcome back more children,beginning with our Year 6 pupils. A great deal ofwork has gone into ensuring that this is donesafely and we are transforming the school intoone of social distancing with an internal oneway system to facilitate this. With classroomshaving just 8 desks, TGMS does look ratherdifferent. There will not be a sports day, end ofyear production or Leavers Assembly. Webelieve that the experiences offered to the pupils17
