Village Voice June/July 2020PENN HOUSEESTATE NEWS“Often it takes a crisis to make peoplefocus on what and who really matters tothem; and the answer seems to be,encouragingly, that what matters is people– relationships, a steady background ofaffection and trust, the ability to nourishlove and friendship by shared activitiesand shared enjoyment.”Like me, I am sure many will feel that theserecent words from Dr Rowan Williams, theformer Archbishop of Canterbury, capture thepositive aspect of the confined way of life weare all leading during the current Covidemergency.However, I am surely not alone, either, inbeing immensely thankful for the open spaceswe have around us in Penn and Tylers Green,which make that confinement so much morebearable. Throughout my time as the custodianof the Penn House Estate, I have been keen toensure that it remains not only accessible tolocal residents but also somewhere that we canwww.pennandtylersgreen.org.ukgenuinely call ‘special’; that is to say, alandscape that advertises the characteristicfeatures of the southern Chilterns to their bestadvantage. My wife and I walk the localfootpaths across the estate for at least an houreach day, and it has been wonderful to see howmany people from our community are doing thesame thing, albeit respecting the disciplines ofsocial distancing.Maintaining and enhancing alandscape as lovely as this one isrewarding, but it is a far-fromstraightforwardtask. Almost alllandscapes in this country arethe product of human effort, andtheir conservation is, by thesame token, a constant yearroundmission. On the PennHouse Estate this depends,chiefly, on two enterprises:arable farming and woodlandmanagement. In a good year –that is to say, when the weatheris reasonably favourable – wemanage satisfactorily to grow a29
