COVID-19:A STUDENT'S VIEWVillage Voice June/July 2020The past few months have moved at a very slowbut steady pace. After the initial panic, we allmore or less eased into an eerily relaxed routine– wake up, banana bread straight into oven,attempt exercise, fall asleep and start again.Collectively, I think we can agree that there isonly so much banana bread one can makebefore the reality of the situation finally hits; weneed to get back on track...I am set to graduate at 20 years old, inNovember. Currently studying Marketing andCommunications, I am at the final sprint of mycourse, in a more unusual way than I hadinitially planned. Weekly lectures have beenreplaced with video web calls, and whilst thishas been a relatively seamless transition, it hasbeen made increasingly difficult to contacttutors I would usually be able to access bywalking down a corridor. It is important to putthis into perspective; each lecturer has their ownfamilies and personal hurdles during thepandemic. Remaining tenacious and proactivein situations out of our control is my best tip foryoung learners – perhaps trying a new craft orhobby to immerse yourself in when workloadsmay feel stressful.I am sure we all have household or distantfamily members that are facing some sort ofchallenges, whether they be personal or businessrelated. Hundreds of us with key workers in ourfamilies, continuing to work hard every daydespite the risks they may face. Whilst my mummay not be a key worker, she has indeed facedher own problems as an independent smallbusiness. Falling into the government’s ‘greyarea’, her business has faced constantuncertainty as to whether or not they will stayafloat amidst the pandemic. However, she hasnot let this get the better of her, taking it uponherself to produce scrubs in the spare time shewww.pennandtylersgreen.org.ukhas for the hard-working NHS staff. There arenow numerous hard working ladies in andaround the village who are working completelyvoluntarily to produce these scrubs, often takingtime out of their usual activities to ensure theseare complete. I admire the selflessness of thesepeople, and am sure we can all agree thatalthough we may see lots of doom and gloomon our screens every day, there are certainlyplenty of positive and hopeful stories amongstour community. Perhaps we can take a momentevery day to think of the good that’s happeningin the world – whether the achievements are bigor small, they are nonetheless a symbol of unityin our period of isolation.
