On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) Diagnostic Services Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

4.4.1 What is CAN?<br />

CAN stands for C<strong>on</strong>troller Area Network and means that c<strong>on</strong>trol units are part of a network and<br />

can interchange data. Although some car manufacturers have used CAN for some years for<br />

communicati<strong>on</strong> between electr<strong>on</strong>ic c<strong>on</strong>trol modules (ECMs), it was not directly c<strong>on</strong>nected to the<br />

diagnostic c<strong>on</strong>nector. In approximately 2001/2002 for Europe and 2003 for North America, the first<br />

car manufacturers started to c<strong>on</strong>nect the CAN communicati<strong>on</strong> lines to the diagnostic c<strong>on</strong>nector.<br />

CAN will be the <strong>on</strong>ly required protocol in near future for OBD.<br />

4.5 Diagnostic Services Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

The OBD program is divided into several sub programs, called ‘Service $xx’. This complies to the<br />

EOBD/OBD-II standards:<br />

OBD-II/EOBD stipulates the m<strong>on</strong>itoring (c<strong>on</strong>tinuous or n<strong>on</strong>-c<strong>on</strong>tinuous) of the functi<strong>on</strong>s of the<br />

following emissi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol related subsystems):<br />
