SKIN
Telomeres &
intrinsic ageing
Skin, or cutaneous, ageing is caused
by two distinct processes: intrinsic
and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic, or
chronologic ageing, is determined by
our genetic clock and is a continuous
process that usually begins in our mid-
20s but doesn’t become evident for
decades. In our 20s, collagen production
begins to slow and elastin has a bit
less spring. Dead skin cells do not shed
as quickly and turnover of new skin
cells decreases.
Extrinsic ageing is environmentally
induced and manifests in age-associated
skin changes, including thinning, laxity
and wrinkles. In addition, sun-exposure
leads to pigmentation, premature
wrinkling, telangiectasia and actinic
elastosis, not to mention skin cancer.
At a cellular level, ageing is thought
to be related to the shortening of
telomeres (the end caps of DNA that
protect chromosomes). In a Nobel Prizeawarded
discovery, scientists have found
that telomeres shorten with each cell
replication and eventually enter a stage
of decline.
Chromosomal DNA is compromised
when the telomeres wear out, causing
cellular senescence – a key catalyst to the
ageing process.
SkinMTX’s award-winning TeloZyme TM
Youth Activator is a revolutionary
multifaceted serum that is inspired by
this discovery. It is specially formulated
to target telomeres and the integrity of
the skin for a more youthful-looking
appearance. CBM
This advanced serum
is formulated to target
telomeres. At the core of its
formulation is TeloZyme TM
Complex, the culmination of a
ground-breaking innovation by
SkinMTX scientists designed
to help reinforce and protect
the skin. This helps to boost
skin condition and provide
better defences against the
signs of ageing. Skin looks less
wrinkled and feels supple
and taut.
