Program Objectives: Comprehensive training in Musical Theatre
History: Florida International University was founded in 1972. The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim
School of Music & Performing Arts opened in 1996 thanks to a wonderful philanthropic gift from
Dr. Herbert & Mrs. Nicole Wertheim. The building is home to the FIU School of Music and
Department of Theatre both of which together put on over 100 performances, rehearsals, and in
the past 20 years, over thousands of costumes and set pieces, with hundreds of instruments
have been presented in The Wertheim. The Wertheim is considered to be one of Miami’s
premier collegiate concert and performance venues featuring world class musicians and
performers. The $14 million performing arts center stands as the centerpiece of Florida
International University’s commitment to the performing arts. A commitment that recognizes the
place of theatre and music in the educational and cultural life of our community.
Facilities, Classrooms, and Theatres: The facility houses a 300-seat Mainstage Theatre, an
Instrumental Hall, a Recital Hall and a Black Box Studio Theatre. There are over 25 practice
rooms, a percussion room, drum room, music technology studio, and much more in the Music
Wing. The Theatre Wing is just as exciting, filled with two green rooms, two dressing rooms, a
costume shop, properties storage, and design shop. The Concert Hall is a Steinway home with
7’ grand piano and 5’-Steinway Baby Grand Pianos in all rehearsal rooms.
Scholarships and/or Assistantships: Students are evaluated for scholarship at the time of
auditions and Assistantships are available for students doing graduate studies.
