Program Objectives: Our primary aim is to provide undergraduate students with the
well-rounded formal preparation necessary for advanced academic or professional study, and to
expose the student body, the Tallahassee community and surrounding areas to experiences in
the arts.
History: Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is an 1890 land-grant institution
dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, resolution of complex issues and the
empowerment of citizens and communities. While the University continues its historic mission of
educating African Americans, FAMU embraces persons of all races, ethnic origins and
nationalities as life-long members of the university community.
Facilities, Classrooms, and Theatres: Charles Winter Wood Theatre/ Edmonds Stage Housed
in Tucker Hall. The 566 seat theatre is fully equipped with state-of-the–art lighting, sound and
projection equipment; two chorus dressing rooms with stage monitors; and a green room with a
kitchenette. Ronald O. Davis Acting Studio serves as a performance classroom and production
black box for the theatre program.
Scholarships and/or Assistantships: The Essential Theatre awards three limited
scholarships. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of the applicant’s scholastic
achievements, creative abilities, level of technical skills and dedication to the learning and craft
of theatre arts.
