Program Objectives: The Theatre Arts program prepares artists and leaders for a diverse and
challenging job market and, through an integrated curriculum, trains practitioners in the field to
impact the development and welfare of their community through viable arts experiences.
History: LMC was founded in 1900 in the western mountains of North Carolina to provide
educational opportunities for the local population. It evolved into a junior college and became a
four-year degree-granting institution in 1991. The theatre department has been an integral part
of that growth for most of the college's existence. We now offer comprehensive degrees in
theatre arts, musical theatre and theatre arts administration, as well as minors in theatre arts
and technical theatre.
Facilities, Classrooms, and Theatres: 700-seat Broyhill Theatre in Hayes Auditorium is our
main performance venue. We also have a fully equipped costume shop and storage facility, a
scenic design studio and shop (featuring extensive props storage), and our main Theatre Arts
Building (TAB) housing faculty offices, our lighting laboratory, classrooms, music and script
libraries, piano lab, dance studio and practice rooms.
Scholarships and/or Assistantships: All students are eligible for academic scholarships from
our department, as well as positions with the Federal Work Study program and institutional
scholarships and financial aid packages.
