401 West Kennedy Blvd - Univ. of Tampa, Dept of THR and DAN
Tampa, Florida, 33606
(813) 257-3987
Chairperson: Michael Staczar, mstaczar@ut.edu
Academic Year: August to May
Degrees Offered: BFA in Musical Theatre; B.A degrees in Dance and Theatre; as well as
Minors in Dance, Dance/Theatre, and Speech/Theatre.
Program Objectives: The University of Tampa offers an intensive four-year program
interdisciplinary BFA Musical Theatre major that includes vocal music, theatre and dance. Our
BA in Theatre is focused on actor training and performance, and the BA in Dance provides an
introduction to choreographic and pedagogical skills needed for teaching diverse populations
and communities.
History: The University of Tampa began its Musical Theatre Program in 1995 and since its
inception, the program has grown in breadth, reputation and size. The major in Theatre was
initiated in 2005 and our newest major in Dance has grown in size and distinction in only its first
few years. An audition/Interview is required for acceptance into all performance-based programs
at the University of Tampa. Although individuals participating in the FTC’s Auditions may be
allowed to consider their performances as the audition for the Musical Theatre and/or Theatre
program, we encourage students to consider attending an Admissions Open House Event to
learn more about the educational opportunities available at UT.
Facilities, Classrooms, and Theatres: In spring 2021, the Department of Theatre and Dance
moved into the new Ferman Center for the Arts. Nearly all acting and theatre courses are
taught within this state of the arts facility that includes the Black Box Theater, the Charlene A.
Gordon Theater, and the Charlene and Mardy Gordon Performance Gallery. Additionally, some
larger scale theatrical presentations and events are performed at the David Falk Theatre, a fully
equipped, 950+ seat proscenium-style theatre.
Scholarships and/or Assistantships: Talent and merit-based funds are available for
scholarships.
