3 The Second Reading: A reading from the New Testament,
other than the Gospels. These writings tell us about the
beginning of the Church.

4 The Gospel: A reading from one of the four Gospels in
the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. The
Gospels tell the story of Jesus’ life. They are the most
important part of the Liturgy of the Word.
The Readings from Scripture are followed by the Homily,
Profession of Faith, and Responsorial Psalm:
1 The Homily: After the Gospel, the priest teaches us about
the readings and invites us to follow Jesus.
2 The Profession of Faith: After the homily, we stand and
typically pray the Nicene Creed together as a Church.
The Nicene Creed is a prayer that states what we believe
as Catholics.
3 The Prayer of the Faithful: We pray together as a Church
for our needs and the needs of the world.
