>> O Brasil pode ser uma potência no manejo e exportação
de madeira nativa?
Acredito que sim. Vemos alguns trabalhos que consideram
que não, que não seria sustentável para suprir uma
demanda mundial. Entretanto são poucas áreas até agora
que estão sendo destinadas ao manejo florestal e nessa
lacuna temos um potencial enorme, com a Floresta Amazônica,
mas também se tivermos expansão para outras
florestas nacionais. Precisamos trabalhar para diminuir o
preconceito com o manejo e mostrar que quanto mais florestas
manejadas, mais florestas teremos em pé e menos
áreas serão destinadas à culturas que afetem o bioma de
forma mais pesada.
>> Quais as principais mudanças que observa em relação
ao manejo realizado quando começou nessa área de
atualmente?
Antigamente o manejo era feito de exploração sem o adequado
planejamento. Havia muita destruição da floresta
que permanecia e isso afetava também a regeneração da
área de manejo. A legislação e as pesquisas foram grandes
aliadas no desenvolvimento do manejo florestal. A
evolução da exploração madeireira saiu de um extrativismo
simples, onde a pessoa ia lá e tirava a árvore, para um
sistema planejado, onde toda extração é controlada pelos
órgãos fiscalizadores. Hoje há um controle muito maior
sobre a atividade, sistemas de rastreamento da madeira
desde seu corte, até o destino final do produto.
>> Qual é seu maior objetivo como pesquisador?
O objetivo como pesquisador é dar respostas para a sociedade.
Respostas que contribuam para a sociedade e,
especificamente para mim, é diminuir o preconceito que
existe em relação ao manejo e contribuir para que a legislação
e os métodos de manejo se aperfeiçoem.

Can Brazil participate significantly in the Forest Management
and export of native timber?
I believe so. We see some publications where people
don’t think so, that it would not be sustainable to meet
global demand. However, up to now, there is only a minimal
area destined for Forest Management. Therefore,
we have enormous potential with the Amazon Forest,
but also if we expand to other national forests. We need
to work to reduce prejudice against Forest Management
and show that the more Forest Management forests, the
more forests we will have standing, and the fewer areas
will be destined for other crops that negatively impact
the biome.
What are the main changes observed concerning how
Forest Management is being carried out from when it
started in the Amazon area and now?
In the past, Forest Management was carried out by
exploitation without proper planning. There was a lot of
destruction of the remaining forest, which also affected
the Forest Management area’s regeneration. Legislation
and research were significant allies in the development
of Forest Management. Forest harvesting evolved from a
simple extraction, where the person went into the forest
and took a tree, to a planned system, where inspection
agencies monitor all extractions. Today, there is much
greater control over the activity, and timber tracking
systems from its cutting, to the final destination of the
product.
What is your primary goal as a scientist?
My objective as a scientist is to give answers to society.
For me, it is to find solutions that contribute to society
and reduce the prejudice concerning Forest Management,
contribute to the legislation, and improve Forest
Management methods.
