Let there be
Rotherham’s Christmas light switch-on event
returns for 2022 to spark your festive spirit.

For the first time, this year’s
annual event will take place
on a Saturday, with a host of
performances happening across
the town centre on Saturday 19th
November. The event, brought to
you by Rotherham Council and
hosted by RB1 Radio, starts at 3pm
with lots of festive fun planned for
all the family.
Listen to live music in Market
Square with the beautiful sound of
The Voice 2022 contestant, Hannah
Rowe. Then get the party SKA-ted
with the upbeat Sheffield reggae
and SKA band, Jungle Lion.

The cast of this year’s
pantomime, Beauty and the
Beast, will be making the trip from
Rotherham Civic Theatre to give a
royal wave to visitors.
And they’re not the only
characters who will be out and
about. Keep an eye out for a pair of
cheeky elves from the National Elf
Service who are here to cheer with
music, magic and comedy. And get
ready for Pif Paf’s electricians, Ray
and Flash, with their giant inflatable
lightbulb that plays uplifting tunes.
Visitors can also see a unique
and ethereal performance from
aerial silks artists, The Dream
Engine. They are bringing their ninemetre
Candle with flickering flame
that you will be instantly drawn to.
There will be free craft workshops
with printmaker, Samantha Groom,
where you can make bright and
bold festive keepsakes.
Find traditional fairground rides at
Effingham Square and warm up with
a hot drink or something tasty from
the food and drink vendors.
And don’t forget to visit the gift
market on Effingham Street to make
a start on your festive shopping.
Then, just before 6pm,
countdown to the big switch-on as
Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Tajamal
Khan, prepares to press the button
and illuminate Rotherham town
centre.
There will be free parking across
all council-owned car parks and
many of the shops and cafes will be
open for the event.
This year, the family-run
independent businesses need
our support more than ever. So
make a pledge to shop local.
Whether you’re buying gifts, festive
decorations, or locally sourced
produce for Christmas dinner, every
pound you spend on the high street
or at the market rather than online
will make a big difference.
