I distinctly recall being shocked at their relatively
weak physical condition. For example, Thuy was thin
as a rail, chain-smoked, and couldn’t complete the O
Course in a timely manner. It caused me then to
underestimate the fighting capacity of the Vietnamese.
I later realized that I had confused the ability to do
many pushups/pullups/situps with the ability to
march all day on a ball of rice, and fight all night, as we
were soon to experience with "Mr. Charles."
