www.legionbcyukon.ca Griffiths, Raymond F. Raymond joined the Royal Air Force at the outbreak of World War II in 1939 in Wolverhampton, England and was assigned to Wellesbourne Airfield, Mountford, England. During his service, he and his unit were subjected to German raids during the Battle of Britain. One situation that took place was when a bomber crash landed on the base and he was assisting the crew to get clear when the plane blew up. Raymond was injured and spent six weeks in hospital. His job on the base was as flying controller with the rank of Corporal. He volunteered for advanced training and was sent to Penhold, Alberta. Raymond left the Air Force in July 1948 and came back to Canada. He now resides in Cranbrook, BC where he is a long time member of Legion Branch #24. BRITISH COLUMBIA / YUKON COMMAND Green, Jack Allan (Joe) Joe was born in Keewatin, Ontario on April 28, 1926. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve at HMCS Chippawa on April 28, 1943. After seamanship training at HMCS Cornwallis and attending Telegraphist School in Saint Hyacinthe, Quebec, Joe was at last posted to HMCS Stettler via HMCS Stadacona in May 1944 and participated in group Workups in Bermuda in June and July 1944. Joe was then posted to HMCS Sioux and did three trips to Russia during the winter of 1944-45 and a side trip to evacuate civilians from Soroya, Norway. HMCS Sioux was then sent to Halifax for refit and VE Day. Joe was released at HMCS Chippawa in October 1945. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-1945 Star, and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Joe has been a Legion Member since 1945 in Keewatin and Marathon in Ontario, and Castlegar, Prince Rupert, Rothesay, Enderby, and now Salmon Arm Branch #62 in BC. He has served on the Executive in most Branches, and served as President in Castlegar, BC. Grillo, Fatimia Fatimia was born in Horta Falls, Azores in 1933. She served in the Horta Police Force in the Azores and during the Korean War served with the Military Police as a translator. Fatimia was a member of Smoky Smith Legion Branch #16 in South Vancouver for sixteen years. She died in 2001. 131
