www.legionbcyukon.ca Beam, Ira Zane Ira joined the Canadian Army in 1941 in Vancouver where he was assigned to the Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles and sent to Nanaimo, BC for basic training. He was sent overseas where he became a Lance Corporal with regimental police duties and was also a dispatch rider in the UK, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He did traffic control duty and guided supply convoys from the Normandy Beaches to forward inland supply locations. Ira’s decorations and medals include the 1939-45 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Defence Medal 1939-45, the France and Germany Star, the Normandy Campaign Medal, the Holland Medal, and the War Medal 1939-45 with Oak Leaf. He was also mentioned in dispatches. Ira returned to Canada in 1945 and has been a member of Legion Branch #24 in Cranbrook for 47 years. BRITISH COLUMBIA / YUKON COMMAND Bartholemew, Edwin Edwin was born on July 9, 1886 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England. He immigrated to Canada and settled in Fernie, British Columbia where he worked as a “cowboy”. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on September 23, 1914, one month after Canada entered World War One. After taking basic training at Camp Valcartier, Quebec, Edwin joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery and saw action in France and Flanders as a member of the First Canadian Contingent. Edwin’s 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, and Allied Victory Medal are displayed in Prince Edward Legion Branch #91 in Langford, BC. Beaman, Wilfred Woodroe (Wilf) Wilf was born in Stoughton, Saskatchewan in 1918. He left school when he was 15 and moved to Quesnel, BC to work on ranches in the Kersley area until he enlisted in the Army on October 2, 1939. Wilf served with the Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles and the Tank Regiment until he was killed in action on September 1, 1944 when a shell hit the turret of the tank he was driving. Two of the other tank crew members were also from Quesnel. Wilf is buried in the Gradara War Cemetery in Gradara, Italy. 65
