www.legionbcyukon.ca Mills, Don Don was born in 1924 in North Vancouver, BC. He served with the Vancouver Irish Fusiliers from 1939-1942. “It was the best job in the world,” he reminisces about his time as the colonel’s batman. Perhaps the lowest point of his army career was falling into a beehive while training near Victoria. While on a short leave in Vancouver, he says he was ‘’shanghaied ‘into the Merchant Navy where he spent the rest of the war on convoys in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. He was eventually declared medically unfit for hot climates but earned the Pacific Star and Burma Clasp. Don also received the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal 1939-1945, and the Norway Convoys Medal (Convoy Cup which was reserved for the Merchant Marine). After returning to civilian life in 1946, Don worked as a master mechanic in Vancouver and eventually had his own garage in North Vancouver with forty-nine employees. Don is a longtime member of Courtenay Branch #17 in Courtenay and resides in Comox, BC. BRITISH COLUMBIA / YUKON COMMAND Miller, Stanley N. (Stan) (Topper) Topper attended school in Quesnel, BC before he enlisted in the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He served in Canada and Britain before he was killed in action two weeks before the war ended in the River Seine Campaign in Holland. Topper is buried in the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-1945. Mitchell, Louis Louis was born in Cochin, Saskatchewan on December 8, 1947. He enlisted in the Navy on February 15, 1965 in Winnipeg and did basic training at HMCS Cornwallis where he also did communicator training. Louis was posted to HMCS Laurent; HMCS Provider in Europe and the Caribbean; HMCS Gatineau; Operations Branch at Maritime Command; HMCS Chippawa, Winnipeg; CFB Halifax; exchange with the US Navy; HMCS Preserver; HMCS Saguenay; and Maritime Command in the Operations Branch where he was promoted to Petty Officer 2 nd Class. Louis then did tours with HMCS Skeena and HMCS Ottawa before going to his final posting at CFB Aldergrove in BC where he was promoted to Petty Officer 1 st Class. Louis retired in 1987 then worked for the BC Government’s Department of Highways for nearly sixteen years. He settled in Lumby, BC where he has been a member of Legion Branch #167 for five years. 205
