Spicer, Nick<br />
Nick was born in Carvel, Alberta on December 1, 1923. He graduated from Strawberry<br />
Hill School and worked on the family farm before going to the West Coast to spend a<br />
short time in the Merchant Marine. He enlisted in the Army in Vancouver in 1941 and<br />
after taking basic training in Alberta, went to England where he took further training<br />
as a dispatch driver and on operating a Sherman tank. Nick’s regiment, the 1 st .<br />
Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment, landed in Courseulles-sur-Mer, France on June<br />
9, 1944. He drove a Kangaroo Armoured Personnel Carrier, converted from a Sherman<br />
tank during the fighting around Falaise. Nick’s regimented continued through<br />
Belgium, the Netherlands and into Germany, but Nick was seriously wounded in<br />
Holland in February 1945. He returned to Canada and was discharged in 1946. He was<br />
awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service<br />
Medal, and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Nick was a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #94 in<br />
Quesnel, <strong>BC</strong> for thirty-six years until his death in 2009.<br />
BRITISH COLUMBIA / YUKON COMMAND<br />
Spicer, Mike<br />
Mike was born in Carvel, Alberta on July 24, 1922. He worked on the family<br />
farm until his late teens, when he went to the West Coast. He joined the<br />
Merchant Marine and served as a third-class engineer aboard several ships<br />
during World War Two. One ship he served on, the SS Bowness Park,<br />
carried ammunition and other supplies to Burma. When the war ended,<br />
Mike went to northern <strong>BC</strong> to work for the provincial forestry as a caterpillar<br />
driver, constructing roads. He later started his own forestry plantation<br />
business. Mike was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Burma Star, and the<br />
1939-1945 War Medal. He has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #43 in<br />
Prince George for thirty years.<br />
Spicer, Steve<br />
Steve was born in Carvel, Alberta on February 24, 1916. He graduated from<br />
Strawberry Hill School and worked as a farm hand for neighbours. He<br />
excelled in baseball and starred for many years as a catcher. He joined the<br />
12 th Manitoba Dragoons in Calgary in 1941 and after basic training, trained<br />
as the operator of a Staghound Lynx ll Scout Car. His regiment landed in<br />
Courseulles-sur-Mer, France on July 9 th 1944 and fought across France,<br />
Belgium, and Holland and into Germany. In May 1945, Steve volunteered<br />
to serve in the Pacific Campaign and was transferred back to Canada and<br />
discharged on January 10, 1946. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the<br />
France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer<br />
Service Medal, and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Steve lives in Westbank, <strong>BC</strong><br />
where he has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #288 for twenty years.<br />
