McQueen (nee McMorland), Janet Loughlin Janet was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 15, 1923. After graduating as a Registered Nurse and Operating Room Nurse from Winnipeg General Hospital, she enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps as a Nursing Sister on October 25, 1950. Janet was posted first to Camp Shilo in Manitoba and then was sent to a British Commonwealth Hospital in Kure, Japan. She stayed there until October 1, 1952 when she went to Scotland via Canada to be married. Janet had been a member of Legion Branch #167 in Lumby for thirty-one years before she died on September 23, 2009. www.legionbcyukon.ca BRITISH COLUMBIA / YUKON COMMAND McPherson, Bernard Bernard was born on June 30, 1921 in Cranbrook, BC to the Malone family, the youngest of eight children. In the summer of 1922, his mother died in childbirth and his father died of cancer in the spring of 1923. None of the children were ever adopted, and most were placed by the Catholic Church in an orphanage. While Bernard was still very young, he was taken as a foster child by the McPherson family in Grand Forks, BC. When he was 19, Bernard used their surname to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Calgary, Alberta on May 30, 1941. He trained as an air gunner and then obtained his pilot’s license. He became a Pilot Officer the day before he was killed, September 24, 1943. Bernard was killed, along with four other men and the pilot, while en route from England to a unit in Algiers, North Africa. The plane crashed, and nothing was left. There were no survivors. McQueen, Alexander Marshall (Alistair) Alistair was born in Falkirk, Scotland on October 25, 1897. Enlisting as a boy bugler in the Royal Artillery in 1912, he trained and was posted to 37 th Field Battery in South Africa. When WWI began, the Battery was sent to France and Belgium where Alistair took part in the retreat from Mons, making him an “Old Contemptible” at the age of 17. Alistair was an NCO in charge of a Boys Battery in India for 14 years. He retired to Scotland after serving at the Depot of the Royal Artillery in Woolwich, England. Alistair was called back to service on September 2, 1939 and served in England and NW Europe until his discharge in 1945 with the rank of Warrant Officer First Class. He received the Military Medal, 1914 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, King George Meritorious Service Medal, King George V Silver Jubilee Medal, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence medal, and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Alistair settled in Lumby, BC in 1978 and was a member of Legion Branch #167 there for twenty-one years. He died in 1991. 201
