La Aldea de San Nicolás
Archaelogical treasures, popular fiestas
and idyllic landscapes
Although La Aldea de San Nicolás may not be
among the most popular choices for tourists looking
for accommodation in Gran Canaria, this enclave
is a real treasure trove for adventurous travellers
who enjoy exploring new places. Visitors who
dare to tour the island by car should not bypass this
wonderful spot, as they will be treated to a tranquil
coastline, archaeological treasures and breathtaking
scenery. In addition, this charming village is the
perfect place to discover a most authentic Canary
culture and delicious gastronomy.
From a time when the ancient pre-Hispanic inhabitants
roamed the island, back in 1350, a small
group of Mallorcans settled in the west of Gran
Canaria erecting a small chapel in honour of San
Nicolás de Tolentino in a cave on the beach. After
the island was conquered by our Spanish ancestors
and following several hundreds of years of territorial
disputes, this urban centre underwent several
changes of name, and although they were all
similar, finally in 2006 the original name of La Aldea
de San Nicolás was re-established.
This is a tourist destination noted for its uniqueness
and natural beauty, and is where fishing is a
fundamental part of the local tradition, along with
agriculture and livestock farming, mainly goats.
These activities continue to be a vital source of subsistence
for the inhabitants of the area.
Located 70 km from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria,
the old part of town boasts several religious and
cultural sites, such as the church of San Nicolás de
Tolentino, built in 1910.
When it comes to mentioning one of the most
outstanding events in La Aldea de San Nicolás, we
undoubtedly refer to the Fiesta del Charco, which
is held every year in September. This festivity takes
place at El Charco de la Aldea, one of the biggest
natural attractions of this municipality.
This stunning charco, or pond, is located next to the
mouth of the Barranco de La Aldea ravine, just a
few metres from the shore, and is home to a large
number and a wide variety of fish. In this fiesta,
hundreds of people gather to catch the fish that live
in this coastal pond with their bare hands. The popular
festival of El Charco enjoys the status of Asset
of Cultural Interest and is a living testimony to the
continuity of ancient pre-Hispanic practices. Unsurprisingly,
nearby this enclave is a large indigenous
settlement, today known as the Archaeological Site
of Los Caserones. The architectural ensemble of the
site is made up of domestic and burial constructions,
making it a fascinating experience to discover
a settlement that is complemented by a necropolis
area of highly unique architecture. Its layout in semicircles
surrounding a central tower is a sight to behold.
In addition, visitors will see how the distribution
of the graves reveals a clear hierarchy, with men
occupying the most prominent places. The area has
been painstakingly prepared to enable both locals
and tourists to enjoy its beauty and history.
Just a few kilometres away from the historic town
centre heading down towards the sea is the fascinating
beach and port of La Aldea. In the past, due
to the lack of road infrastructures, this area played
an important role in the maritime communication
of the villagers with other nearby ports. Nowadays,
it has become a small marina much appreciated by
locals and tourists, both due to its excellent fishing
facilities and its charming surroundings, offering
breathtaking views of the Atlantic and magnificent
sunsets, all with the majestic Teide mountain of
Tenerife, the highest peak of Spain, as a backdrop.
Back on the beach of La Aldea, it can be said that
it is a natural paradise that no one should miss on
their visit to this municipality. Its crystalline waters
and characteristic pebbly sand will transport visitors
to a world of tranquillity and relaxation. This
beach is divided into two areas: Las Barquillas, an
extensive area with a solarium and refreshing showers,
and La Caletilla, a beautiful beach comprising
black sand and pebbles which is accessed through
a unique tunnel dug into the mountain overlooking
the picturesque pier. For those looking for a quieter
atmosphere, we recommend visiting the Playa del
Puerto, a meeting place for many families and tourists
looking to enjoy the sea in peace and harmony.
Here visitors can enjoy the soft black sand and clear
waters while relaxing in a truly unique environment.
After an adventure-packed day out, there is no better
plan than enjoying the delicious local cuisine in
one of the many bars in the area, which provide the
finest fresh fish dishes and homemade food even
under the shade of trees located next to the beach.
So do not hesitate and come and discover the natural
beauty of La Aldea de San Nicolás. Beautiful natural
postcard scenery will be the incentive that will
have you exploring every corner of this jewel of the
west coast of the island.
