A new reproductive success has taken place at
Loro Parque's facilities, with the birth of two young
ringed lemurs. This species is classified as "endangered"
by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation
of Nature) so the birth of each calf is a step of
the utmost importance in the preservation of the
species. The little ones live with their families in the
habitat of Loro Parque, showing visitors the close
family relationships that unite the group and the
careful treatment that the youngest ones receive
from their mothers.
To prevent lemurs from becoming another extinct
species, it is necessary to keep them under human
care in parks that work under a scientific premise
of conservation and knowledge of the species,
such as Loro Parque.
Loro Parque, a centre for the preservation of biodiversity
The basis of Loro Parque's work is the protection
and recovery of biodiversity all over the planet. This
work, carried out in the world's scientifically based
zoos, has extraordinary relevance because it provides,
on the one hand, the necessary knowledge
to know the species in depth, allowing actions in
the natural environment; and on the other hand,
to create a genetic bank of individuals with genetic
diversity that, if necessary, can repopulate their
original habitats.
With these, there are now five offspring that have
been born in the lemur habitat at Loro Parque
since the first pair arrived in 2017. The constant and
intensive animal welfare work carried out at the zoo
is responsible for achieving the specific conditions
for the lemurs, just like the rest of the species, to
reproduce successfully. It is also responsible for the
proper physical, social and emotional development
of the animals.
All the world's lemurs in the same exhibition
At present, there are only 2,500 lemurs in the wild:
a tiny number that is easy to imagine if we visualise
the number of visitors to an average auditorium
and think that these would be all the surviving
specimens in the world.
Lemurs are primates, although their characteristics
differ markedly from other species of this genus.
This is due to the evolutionary isolation in which
they have developed, which makes them a primate
taxon with unique characteristics, inherited from
the first primates that populated the earth.
Highly sociable, they live in family groups, so the
birth of their young is for them an event that favours
their well-being. The cubs grow up under the care
of the whole group, although they remain most of
the time with their mothers. Their large round eyes,
their hands with five prehensile toes, their soft fur
and long tails make them one of the most admired
animals for their beauty and the tenderness they
inspire in visitors who come to meet them at Loro
Parque.

are born at Loro Parque
Nacen en Loro Parque dos crías de Lemur,
una especie en peligro de extinción
Un nuevo éxito reproductivo se ha producido
en las instalaciones de Loro Parque, con el nacimiento
de dos crías de Lemur Anillado. Esta
especie está catalogada como “en peligro” por
la UICN (Unión Internacional para la Conservación
de la Naturaleza) por lo que el nacimiento
de cada cría supone un paso de máxima importancia
en la preservación de la misma. Los pequeños,
conviven con sus familias en el hábitat
de Loro Parque mostrando a los visitantes que
se acercan, las estrechas relaciones familiares
que unen al grupo y el cuidadoso trato que los
más jóvenes reciben de sus madres.
Evitar que los lémures se conviertan en otra más
de las especies extinguidas, pasa por el mantenimiento
de ejemplares bajo cuidado humano
en los parques que trabajan bajo una premisa
científica, de conservación y conocimiento de
las especies, como Loro Parque.
Loro Parque, centro de preservación de la
biodiversidad
Loro Parque tiene como base de su funcionamiento,
el trabajo por la protección y recuperación
de la biodiversidad en todo el planeta. Este
trabajo, desarrollado en los parques zoológicos
con base científica del mundo, es de extraordinaria
relevancia porque proporciona, por una
parte, el conocimiento necesario para conocer
a las especies de forma profunda, permitiendo
acciones en el medio natural; y por otra, crear
un banco genético de individuos con diversidad
genética que, llegado el caso, puedan repoblar
sus hábitats originales.
Con estas, ya son cinco las crías que han nacido
en el hábitat de los lémures en Loro Parque desde
que llegó la primera pareja en 2017. El constante
e intensivo trabajo de bienestar a animal
que se mantiene en el zoológico es el responsable
de conseguir las condiciones específicas
para que los lémures, igual que el resto de las
especies, consigan reproducirse de manera exitosa.
Y el que, además, propicia el desarrollo físico,
social y emocional adecuado de los animales.
Todos los lémures del mundo, en un auditorio
En la actualidad, se cuentan apenas 2500
ejemplares de lémures en la naturaleza: una
pequeñísima cantidad que es fácil de imaginar
si visualizamos el número de visitantes de un
auditorio medio y pensamos que esos serían
todos los ejemplares que perviven en el mundo.
Los lémures son primates, aunque sus características
guardan notables diferencias con las
otras especies de este género. Esto se debe al
aislamiento evolutivo en el que se han desarrollado
lo que los convierten en un taxon de
primates con unas características únicas, heredadas
de los primeros primates que poblaron
la tierra.
Altamente sociables, viven en grupos familiares,
por lo que el nacimiento de las crías es para
ellos un acontecimiento que favorece su bienestar.
Las crías crecen bajo el cuidado de todo el
grupo, aunque permanecen la mayor parte del
tiempo junto a sus madres. Sus grandes ojos redondos,
sus manos con cinco dedos prensiles,
su pelaje suave y su larga cola, los convierten en
unos de los animales más admirados por su belleza
y la ternura que inspiran en los visitantes
que acuden a conocerlos a Loro Parque.
