Sardina, one of Spain’s top 10 diving locations
The area of Sardina Bay was declared a Special
Conservation Area (ZEC for its acronym in Spanish),
and its protected maritime area stretches from
the Barranco de Juncal ravine to Punta de Gáldar.
This declaration of the maritime area of Sardina as
a ZEC zone has facilitated the dissemination and
study of the environmental qualities that this part
of the coast of Gáldar treasures, a decision that has
been rewarded in recent years with the Blue Flag
for the beach and with the celebration of more and
more events in the area, including the Swimming
Crossing, the Swim & Run Duathlon and the firmly
established Fotosub Sardina photo competition.
Everyone knows that obtaining the Blue Flag on a
beach is down to the efforts of the general public
and townsfolk to comply with the required criteria
related to legality, accessibility, health, environmental
education, cleanliness and safety, and
undoubtedly a recognition for the quality of the
water and the effort made year after year by the
City Council to provide its beaches with the facilities,
services and activities necessary to make the
best of the coastline available to users, citizens and
tourists.
In recent years, diving is perhaps the activity to
have led to an increase the number of users in the
bay of Sardina de Gáldar, which thanks to its unique
natural characteristics, is one of the best places on
the island for diving enthusiasts. Indeed, it offers
unique seabeds and a variety of diving choices
that are highly coveted by both expert and novice
divers, and whose qualities the participants in the
annual underwater photography competition, Fotosub
Sardina, hold in high esteem due to the variety
of its seabed and the cleanliness of its waters.
For all these reasons, the waters make Sardina one
of the best locations in Spain for divers, and it has
been recognised as one of the 10 top places to dive
in Spain by daily newspaper El País.
The coast of Sardina de Gáldar has three fundamental
qualities that make it the best area for diving
on the island of Gran Canaria: easy access from
the pier, a depth of no less than 18 metres and the
huged variety of marine fauna that flourishes within
such a small space.
However, Sardina Bay is not just renowned for its
seabed. Its family beach atmosphere that is suitable
for everyone, the spectacular landscape of cliffs,
the varied gastronomic offer rich in local produce
and being able to enjoy the finest sunsets with the
sun sinking behind the neighbouring island of Tenerife
are some of the reasons to choose this area of
Gáldar for a break at any time of the year.
