Countries from four different continents
come together in Valsequillo
Taking a trip around the world will be possible on
Saturday 2nd September without even leaving
Valsequillo. Having not been held for the last three
years, the Town Hall of Valsequillo in collaboration
with the Department of Institutional Cooperation
and International Solidarity at the Cabildo de Gran
Canaria and the "El Cristo de la Barrera" Neighbourhood
Association have brought back this Intercultural
Gathering, an event that turns the municipality
into the epicentre of the many different cultures
that exist in Gran Canaria.
The aim of the conference is to promote harmonious
coexistence between the different immigrant
peoples present on the island, as well as cooperation
and solidarity between peoples in general, in
order to achieve a positive coexistence between
different cultures. On this occasion, more than 30
different countries from four continents will showcase
the best of their crafts, gastronomy and folklore
in the main square of the neighbourhood of La
Barrera.
The day will kick off at 11:00 with children's activities.
The official opening of the event will take place
at 16:00 and will end with a rock concert by the Argentinian
group "Argentum". Argentina is the host
country for this year's edition, in which Ukraine is
participating for the first time. Ukraine will be the
destination for whom the host country will donate
the proceeds of this charity event.
In the evening the public will be treated to live
music, demonstrations of traditional dances and
games, cultural exhibitions, henna workshops, African
fashion shows, other workshops and the sale
of handicrafts and gastronomic products, among
other initiatives.
The event aims to foster the creation of common
spaces for participation and cooperation, a goal to
which the local council is committed every year.
