Dear First Lady Cathy Justice,
My name is Meg Hickey. I am an ambassador and the WV state co-lead for the Drug
Epidemic Memorial Wall campaign. Our goal is to put up a Memorial Wall in all 50 State
Capitol complexes to honor our lost loved ones and continue to provide a voice for them.
We are all victims of this national drug epidemic. Fentanyl poison is destroying our state
and this country one fatality at a time.
I lost my 32-year-old daughter, Nora, to fentanyl poisoning on September 8, 2022; she will
be Forever 32.
Nora was my only child. Nora was born prematurely, weighing 3 pounds and 2 ounces on
July 27, 1990. Nora was in neonatal intensive care for the first three months of her life.
One of my happiest moments was when I got to bring her home from the hospital.
Nora was a very kind and empathetic person. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse by
profession and really enjoyed working with her elderly patients and brought them a lot of
comfort during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Nora was an extremely sensitive person and as
a result of her job and an unhealthy personal relationship Nora had been diagnosed and
was being treated for depression. She was in a treatment program that provided weekly
counseling and meetings. Nora had left her unhealthy relationship and had moved back
home and for six months continued to make improvements. She was in the process of
returning to her nursing career and was looking forward to a great life.
On September 7, 2022, for reasons unknown Nora returned to her ex-boyfriend’s house
where she passed away the next evening. The autopsy results showed that she passed
from an accidental overdose of fentanyl. There is still an open police investigation as to
the circumstances of how and where she received the drugs that took her life.
Nora didn’t want to die. She and the other victims of fentanyl poisoning weren’t ready to
die. They have all left behind grieving families whose lives will never be the same.
Please help us with our Memorial Wall so we can both honor our lost loved ones and raise
public awareness in order to fight the fentanyl epidemic and prevent other families the
pain of losing a loved one.
