a contrast and dialogue with the abstract
canopied structure. As for the lighting design,
the underside of the canopy is sparingly illuminated
from below and the profiles of the arched
walls accentuated. Lighting for the stalls,
however, is intensified so as to turn them into
glowing bodies that float in the night.
Nanliao Fishing Harbor boasts a rich history
of fishery development and strong potential
for recreation and tourism. Guided by a wellinformed
master plan, several major infrastructure
projects have been completed in
recent years, including a 17-kilometer landscaped
coastline, kite field, sports park, familyfriendly
beach, and parking provisions. As a
key facility linking fishery and tourism and
recreation, this new building serves to reorganize
functions and respond to the spatial
framework. More importantly, it is a piece of
site-specific vernacular architecture endowed
with a strong identity and unrestrained qualities
that are in constant dialogue with the landscape,
sensitive to the microclimate, and
aligned with local construction technology.
