<strong>The</strong> citizens of ancient Rome were accustomed<br />

to<br />

place the images of their great ancestors in the vestibulec<br />

of their houses. <strong>The</strong>se venerable busts constantly<br />

met their eyes, and reminded them of the<br />

glorious actions of the dead. <strong>The</strong>y were thus<br />

prompted to imitate the heroic examples of their<br />

illustrious fathers, and to<br />

transmit a worthy name to<br />

posterity. <strong>The</strong> idea was certainly a noble one, and<br />

was, to some extent, .successful. It created a pride<br />

of character, which led to noble deeds, in a long li'ie<br />

of glorious Romans, through many ages of that<br />

gigantic commonwealth.<br />

This fact recognizes a great truth, which has an<br />

important bearing on the subject of power over<br />

other<br />

minds. It teaches the depth and practical results of<br />

oft-repeated impressions. Those marblo busts, cold<br />

and lifeless as they were, repeated their silent les*
