bility of simulating a lovely spirit. <strong>The</strong> manners<br />

of a lady may be polished, her air soft and graceful,<br />

and the countenunce wreathed in smiles; but unless<br />

the soul itself is lovely, the impression made <strong>by</strong> *he<br />

character will be unfavorable, at least, on those with<br />

whom she constantly associates. <strong>The</strong> mental habit<br />

will betray itself. i.f unloving and unlovely, it will<br />

display its features, in spite of the most artful precautions.<br />

If really lovely in itself, its beams will cast<br />

their lustre on the outward manners, and there<strong>by</strong><br />

attract other minds, as surely as the fierce mental<br />

energy of Marius conquered the spirit of the Gallic<br />

soldier.<br />

Seek, therefore, young lady, to adorn yourself<br />

with this most charming of all ornaments. Shrink<br />

from every secret moral deformity, more than you do<br />

from physical disfigurement. Repress every inward<br />

movement of unlovely emotions. Regard envy,<br />

pride, hate, revenge, selfishness, rage and kindred<br />

passions, as serpents which must have no abode in<br />

your heart ; or as poisons, which, if admitted intc<br />

your mental life, will produce loathsome eruptions,
