In some portions of the frigid zones the inhabitants<br />

themselves with habitations beneath the<br />

surface of the ground. During their brief summer,<br />

they convey large stores of food and % i to these<br />

subterranean abodes." When winter comes, they<br />

enter them and live peacefully there, indifferent tc<br />

the desolating storms and dreary snows which fall<br />

and rage above their heads. <strong>The</strong>ir home is theii<br />

winter world, and it contains all their little wants<br />

Hence, they live in secure plenty, smiling<br />

at the howling storm which leaves their abode<br />

untouched and safe.<br />

Very similar is the influence of religion in human<br />

life. It makes its possessor independent of outward<br />

circumstances; it enables her to defy the changes of<br />

life. What if friends are false, health decays, fortune<br />

fails, wasting storms drive furiously around her<br />

head ? Is her happiness lost ? Nay ! for she has<br />

not depended upon friends, health or<br />

fortune, for he:<br />

highest pleasure. As superior streams of comfort
