<strong>The</strong> girl shuddered at this<br />

revolting proposal, and<br />

instinctively reti-cated a few paces. But the savage<br />

glances of the mob assured her that her venerable<br />

father must p-^rish, unless she accepted the loathsome<br />

conditions. <strong>The</strong> test was terrible, but love<br />

triumphed. She took the proffered glass, and swallowed<br />

its contents. Her father was saved.<br />

It should stimulate you to its imitation<br />

Not that you will ever have opportunity for sucl><br />

extraordinary proofs as these two ladies gave of theii<br />

affection ; but you are bound to manifest the same<br />

your deportment toward your parents.<br />

You should study to anticipate and obey their slightest<br />

wishes ; address them in tones and words of<br />

respectful affection ; never disgrace yourself <strong>by</strong><br />

uttering an unkind word to either of them ; make<br />

them your confidants ; keep nothing secret, especial
