Hence, she is not only the queen, but the star, of the<br />

magnificent court ovei which she presides. Her<br />

husband idolizes her.<br />

Her people welcome her presence<br />

with enthusiastic plaudits, that proclaim the<br />

intensity of their admiration.<br />

Turn now to another and sadder portrait. See,<br />

standing" before a legal tribunal, a woman clad in<br />

coarse rags. Her tail form is slightly bowed, yet<br />

it betrays an air of dignity. Her eyes are dim with<br />

sorrow, but at times are lighted with a few brilliant<br />

rays. Beneath the eyelids is a black circle, graved<br />

<strong>by</strong> grief and woe. Her face is pallid, and her long<br />

hair, flowing down upon her neck, is white with<br />

anguish. All eyes are turned upon her, not in love<br />

or pity, but in curiosity, in hate, or in triumph.<br />

Do you demand the name of these ladies? Alas!<br />

both these pictures represent one celebrated woman<br />

Marie Antoinette ! In the first, she is newly<br />

ari.ved from Austria, and recently n^edded to King<br />

Louis ; in the second, she is deposed from her<br />

throne, and placed at the bar of a remorseless revolu-
