continually produces them. It requires tuning<br />

therefore, or it must be a self-tormenting thing o*<br />

discords forever— magnificent in its construction, glorious<br />

in its powers, yet failing to attain the sublime<br />

end of its creation. To drop my comparison, the<br />

mind is unable of itself to develop those qualitiefj<br />

which are necessary to its own enjoyment, and to its<br />

right influence over others. And nothing less than<br />

the power of religion can repress its evil tendencies,<br />

and develop its superior qualities. As the tuner of<br />

instruments may justly say of the piano, " without<br />

me it is nothing," so does Christ actually say to<br />

you, lady, "without me ye can do nothing."<br />

Christ,<br />

and Christ alone, is sufficient to clothe you with that<br />

loveliness of moral character which will cause your<br />

life to pass happily to yourself and to be beneficial to<br />

others. How else can your life be<br />

" A sacred stream.<br />

In whose calm depths the beautiful and pure<br />

Alone are mirrored " ?<br />

How else can you acquire that guileless ingenu-
