truth, entering her gentle spirit, added lustre to her<br />

virtues, and consecrated her skill to deeds of mercy.<br />

It produced a Mary, with her meek loveliness; a<br />

Dorcas, with her benevolent care for the poor ; a<br />

Lyuia and an "elect lady," with their noble<br />

hospitality.<br />

It made delicate and trembling girls heroic<br />

martyrs ; but it never produced a bold declaimer, at.<br />

Amazonian disputant, nor a shameless contender for<br />

political and ecclesiastical rights. It elevated her,<br />

but left her in her own sphere. It increased her<br />

influence, but it never changed her mission. Neither<br />

does the Gospel intimate that at the climax of its<br />

triumph it will remove her from her distinct and<br />

appropriate sphere.<br />

Permit me, <strong>by</strong> way of illustrating another feature<br />

of this question, to lead you into the sitting-room of<br />

a respectable and pious lady. She is neatly but<br />

plainly attired, and is busy, with the aid of a servant,<br />

dusting and cleaning the room.<br />
