enaction. But see ! it descries your ship, and,<br />

prompted <strong>by</strong> an instinct of self-preservation, flies<br />

toward it for shelter. Alighting, it hides under the<br />

lee of your bulwarks, in a coil of cable. Mark its<br />

exhaustion I See<br />

how its wet breast heaves with the<br />

violent beating of its little heart ! Its fright is excessive,<br />

and it is questionable if it will recover itself<br />

or live.<br />

Tell me, lady, why this little trembler is in so<br />

pitiful a plight, while the stormy petrel gambols<br />

freely among the waves ! You<br />

cannot answer.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n listen ! <strong>The</strong><br />

petrel is in its appropriate sphere<br />

<strong>The</strong> little trembler is a land-bird, tempted, at first, <strong>by</strong><br />

sunny weather, to wander among the islands, and<br />

driven, at last, <strong>by</strong> a strong wind to sea. He is out of<br />

his sphere; and hence his quiet has fled, his song is<br />

silenced and his life endangered. God made him<br />

for the land ; the grove is his home, and his sphere<br />

is among the flowers.<br />

It is thus with the entire creation. Everything<br />
