fruit of happiness and moral oeauty. Nor is<br />

this a light task ; for, as Flavel remarks, " It is<br />

much easier to pull many weeds out of a garden,<br />

tlian one corruption out of the heart, and to procure<br />

a hundred flowers to adorn a plot, than one grace to<br />

beautify a soul."<br />

In extensive museums there are usually collected<br />

various specimens of marble statuary. <strong>The</strong> rudelysculptured,<br />

grotesque figures of half-civilized art are<br />

there, looking like caricatures, rather than resemblances<br />

of any living thing. Ranging from these<br />

unseemly ofTsprings of an untutored genius, there<br />

are images in every stage of perfection and imperfection,<br />

up to the loveliest and highest creations of<br />

the artist, inspired <strong>by</strong> the purest conceptions of<br />

beauty. But all these varied forms were once unhewn<br />

and shapeless portions of the quarry. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

owe their several differences of form and figure to<br />

the diversity of skill employed in giving them their<br />
