Daniel Aslanian, Marina Rabineau and their niece Marion have chosen to plant vineyards West of Brest,
almost on the northern tip of the bay, not far from the Petit Minou lighthouse.
It is an open secret that climate change has paved the way for
vineyards to be grown as far North as southern Sweden. But
on the very tip of continental Europe, in such a damp location
near the sea is certainly a challenge. The threesome are not
your average winegrowers though – during the week, Daniel
works as a geologist with Ifremer, Marina is also a geologist
but with CNRS, and Marion runs a wine exhibition in
Languedoc. At Le Minou they have chosen to plant Chenin –
do you know of many Chenin vines planted on granite? – and
some Pinot noir, from Burgundy. On their steep, 45% inclines,
basking in the mild climate in the bay, the first vines are now
entering their third year and are looking superb. Everything
is grown “more than organically”, with massal selection, no
sprays and 100% agro-forestry. The first wines are due to be
made next year. “Perhaps some sparkling wine”, says Marion,
“but for now we have to work on ripeness”. Watch this space!
