Rossi, Marketing Services Supervisor Innovation in the fastening industry never stops. There are always new markets and applications emerging that drive engineers and fabricators to seek out new, more reliable fastening solutions. Case in point: at PennEngineering®, we’ve seen an increase in requests for fastening solutions for magnesium and aluminum castings. This is particularly true of our customers in the automotive electronics and consumer electronics markets. And there are good reasons why. Magnesium is one of the lightest structural metals with a density that’s about two-thirds that of aluminum and one-fourth that of steel. And despite its low density, it has high strength properties that provide structural integrity to cast components. Magnesium also has excellent machinability and a high thermal conductivity. All these characteristics make this material particularly suitable for applications in the automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics industries, among other industries. When it comes to Aluminum castings, one of the biggest benefits is that it creates lighter parts, with more surface finishing options than other die cast alloys. Aluminum alloys used in die casting exhibit good strength and durability, and many have inherent corrosion resistance. The material also has excellent thermal conductivity, making it well-suited for components that require efficient heat dissipation. Like magnesium, aluminum’s versatility makes it a popular material choice for many industries. Common Challenges Let’s look at the most common customer challenges with today’s predominant fastening technologies and explore some of the new PennEngineering® innovations that are helping many markets overcome these challenges. One challenge is that threads in cast metal sheets are costly to create and require a secondary process. Another challenge is that a cast hole that is secondarily tapped yields a weak thread because it is brittle. Also, fasteners such as helical inserts (a commonly used technology) can add significant labor costs and require secondary drilling on the cast body for install threads. So what’s the end result for many customers that are using traditional fastening technologies? They’re experiencing limitations in performance, cost, and process – a combination that gives them reason to explore new, alternative fastening solutions like PEM®CastSert press-in inserts. PEM ® CastSert Press-In Inserts: 80% Faster Install Over Other Methods The PEM® 300 Series Stainless Steel CastSert inserts are designed for use in die-cast alloys and soft metals less than HRB 70 / HB 125. They provide strong and durable metal threads in die-cast magnesium and die-cast aluminum and also extruded aluminum. The simple press-in installation process for these inserts uses a flat punch and anvil to install all sizes and lengths – approximately 80% faster than other methods.
