INSIGHTS
People in business, NGOs and governments across
the world were appalled and swung into action to
right the wrongs. A lot of work was done to solve
the problems. Governments made concerted efforts
to work with each other to make laws against
the practices of modern slavery. The Australian
Government, for example, passed the Modern Slavery
Act in 2018.
Businesses that were accused of modern slavery
realised that doing the right thing was actually
good business and they changed practices.
Seafood buyers and distributors doubled
down on the need for transparency and
accountability. Organisations such as the
Consumer Goods Forum and Global
Sustainable Seafood Initiative developed
standards and auditing programs to ensure
businesses are not using forced child
labour, wages are fair, there is freedom
to associate and practice collective
bargaining, and that worker health
and safety is respected. Thankfully,
the state of play in 2024 has vastly
improved.
If you’re buying from a reputable
supplier, such as Bidfood, you
can be assured you are
getting seafood that is
both ethical and
sustainable.
BIDFOOD IS ACROSS THE HOT ISSUES THAT
ARE SWIRLING AROUND SEAFOOD TODAY.
SOME OF THESE INCLUDE OVERFISHING,
ILLEGAL FISHING, MODERN SLAVERY AND
LESS-THAN-ACCEPTABLE AQUACULTURE.
