*** James Roger Smith’s death. “... upon all accounts my son<br />

obtained from officers & men of the Regiment [The Black Watch];<br />

there seemed no doubt that the poor fellow was killed when carrying<br />

our boy out of action, the machine gun man who went to the rescue<br />

when Smith fell, had difficulty in disengaging our boy from Smith<br />

who he stated was dead. My son firmly believes that that was the<br />

case, & that there is no truth in him having died in hospital. Now,<br />

there is not one man of the platoon left who was out that day.”<br />

Many relating to James Roger Smith, a Canadian who came back<br />

from working in Honolulu at the beginning of the war to join up<br />

and was shot while attempting to rescue his lieutenant. An extensive<br />

correspondence of to Elgood from Smith and her efforts to get his<br />

letters published.<br />

About midday the convoys began coming in. I gave a hand in the<br />

theatre giving anaesthetics &c and at intervals helped in other ways.<br />

I was mostly in the theatre taking notes of cases anaestheticising<br />

&c. Sunday morning July 2nd. Ghastly wounds today. I don’t mind<br />

anything now. Theatre like a shambles. Many amputations &c. I’m<br />

become a regular anaesthetist it seems... . Went into reception room<br />

& helped there.” - Miller.<br />

58. Beardsley (Aubrey, illustrator, 1872-98).- Gray (Rev. John<br />

Henry, author and Roman Catholic priest, 1866-1934) dr a f t o f<br />

a l e t t e r to messrs. lo n g m a n s, gr e e n & Co., p u b l i s h e r’s, 2pp.,<br />

4to, on writing paper of the North British Station Hotel, Edinburgh,<br />

[1904], in reply to their letter of 20 September 1904, concerning the<br />

publication of The Last Letters of Aubrey Beardsley, 1904, edited<br />

by John Gray, the letter revealed to Longmans that Beardsley’s last<br />

letters were mostly addressed to André Raffalovich, who did “not wish<br />

his identity to transpire”. There is a reference on last line to Arthur<br />

Symons’s monograph on Beardsley and to a forthcoming exhibition<br />

of Beardsley’s drawings in Vienna, to Madame Strindberg’s interest<br />

in a German translation of Beardsley’s letters and the rebuff given<br />

her by Raffalovich, to the horrors of consumption and the power of<br />

divine grace in Beardsley, torn in two along central fold, browned;<br />

and a copy of the Aubrey Beardsley Exhibition at the Victoria and<br />

Albert Museum 1966, v.s., v.d. (2). £300 - £350<br />

England from Italy, “after a journey that I fear indeed must have<br />

been beastly if you had to go through Oxford that same night”,<br />

proposing possible days for meeting in London and going together<br />

to Lamb House, “to great comfort & a lovely (if lonely) garden and<br />

asking him to write, folds, slightly browned. £750 - £1,000<br />
