*** Rare first edition of Erastus’ important and influential treatise,<br />

clandestinely printed in England, arguing on scriptural grounds that the<br />

sins of professing Christians should be punished by civil law only.<br />

bookseller of Edinburgh, 1602 b o u n d w i t h Heroes ex Omni Historia<br />

Scotica Lectisimi, title with small woodcut printer’s device, Leiden,<br />

Christopher Guyotius for Andrew Hart, bookseller of Edinburgh,<br />

1603, together 2 works in 1 vol., first e d i t i o n s, a few small waterstains,<br />

occasional spotting, a few finger-marks, early 18th century<br />

calf-backed marbled boards, upper joint starting, but holding firm,<br />

corners worn, rubbed, 4to £500 - £700<br />

*** Two uncommon works by the Scottish poet Johnston. He was<br />

a friend of Justus Lipsius and doubtless of the other scholars whose<br />

epigrams preface the present work - among them Joseph Scaliger, Jan<br />

Dousa and Daniel Heinsius. He was also closely attached to Andrew<br />

Melville, who probably helped him to obtain the professorship of<br />

divinity at St.Andrews c.1593, when he was ‘Maister of the new<br />

college’.<br />

*** A good copy of an interesting verse history of Edward III,<br />

commissioned by, and dedicated to Charles I. We can trace only two<br />

other copies auction since 1978.<br />
