plans, 1 map a little closely trimmed to just outside border at outer
edges, a little light water-staining to lower margins on a few ff.,
2T1&2 lightly browned, early 19th century polished calf, gilt, gilt
spine in compartments with gilt Devonshire monogram at head and
leather label, spine slightly faded, [cf. Wing S891], folio, S.Griffin,
for H.Twyford, Tho.Dring, and I, 1660. £800 - £1,200
*** Rare at auction. We can trace only three copies offered since
1976. This appears to be a variant of the first edition Wing S891.
A copy with the same collation is present in the Bodleian. Includes
Sicily and Malta in addition to mainland Italy.

a few small repaired tears, title with small ink number and a few
repairs, repair to lower margin of H1, some spotting, browned,
antique style panelled calf, spine gilt, spine slightly faded, [Wing
V48A; cf. Blackmer 1712], small folio, J.Macock, for John Place,

*** The text consists of 54 letters written by della Valle to the
neapolitan physician Schipano duting the course of his travels
through the Holy Land, Syria, Persia and India. The greatest number
of letters are from Persia and Constantinople.
