an elegant lettre batarde, modern vellum, c. 135 x 90 mm., France,<br />

*** An attractive fragment containing John’s account of the events<br />

leading up to the Crucifixion.<br />

10. Pentecost, s i n g l e l e a f f r o m a bo o k o f ho u r s, illuminated<br />

manuscript on vellum, large miniature of Pentecost, the Virgin<br />

kneeling at prayer, surrounded by seven apostles, with more just<br />

visible in the background, the Holy Ghost above, in an architectural<br />

setting, with three lines of text below, in a gothic liturgical hand,<br />

with a full border of naturalistic foliage, flowers and fruits on a<br />

yellow ground, with a bird on one side and a monkey playing a<br />

dulcimer (?) below, framed and glazed, 155 x 110 mm., [Southern<br />

Netherlands, ?Bruges, c.1500]. £3,000 - £4,000<br />

?ribbon appended with good impression, folds, 126 x 326mm., 10th<br />

September 1507; and 21 others, including 4 more 16th century items<br />

relating to Kent (Bettisden, Egerton and Pluckley), deeds and bonds<br />

relating to Hertfordshire, Suffolk, Lancashire (Rochdale) etc., and<br />

a small quantity of others, 18th and 19th century paper documents,<br />

including wills, copies of enclosure awards, abstracts of titles, v.s.,<br />

manuscript in French, on paper, 45 ff., with 1 preliminary and 13<br />

final blank ff., c. 30 lines, written in black ink in a clear secretarial<br />

hand, with some marginalia, and the last 2 ff. in difference, slightly<br />

later hands, some marking, the last 2 ff soiled and the margins<br />

frayed, with very slught loss, bound in a leaf from a large manuscript<br />

bible, France, 12th century, from Revelations ch 20 & 21, double<br />

column, 29 lines, rubruicated, 2 initials, one with pen-and-ink<br />

decoration, worn and soiled, holed on spine and elsewhere, inner<br />

text partly covered, modern cloth drop-down case, c. 260 x 170 mm.,<br />

Domdidier, c. 1580. £400 - £600<br />

*** Census of the lands and rents due to the parish priest, ‘Pierre de<br />

Disieu’, of ‘Dompeddier’, now Domdidier, in the canton of Fribourg,<br />

Switzerland. It consists of a ‘Repertoire..’, listing the forty-eight<br />

tenants of Domdidier and the associated hamlet ‘Eyssy’, followed<br />

by extensive details of their lands, families, marriages, leases, rents<br />

&c, providing a full account of the intricate economic workings of<br />

a recently post-feudal village. Many of the names of the villagers<br />

are still found in the area today. The binding is a sadly mutilated<br />

fragment of what must have been a most handsome bible.<br />
