a. Marginal camps, considered “illegal settlements”, were established during different waves of displacement. They also provided shelter to refugees<br />

displaced as a result of the destruction of official camps <strong>and</strong> refugee housing during the civil war in Lebanon.<br />

b. <strong>Refugee</strong> “gatherings” are located far from the cities <strong>and</strong> are largely inhabited by refugees who have moved out of camps due to improved socioeconomic<br />

status. Unlike camps, refugees in gatherings own their homes.<br />

2.3 Demographic Indicators<br />

The <strong>Palestinian</strong> refugee <strong>and</strong> IDP population is young. More than one-third of all registered refugees are below the<br />

age of fifteen. There are no statistics <strong>for</strong> internally displaced <strong>Palestinian</strong>s. However, as differences between refugee<br />

<strong>and</strong> non-refugee populations in major Arab host states are negligible (except <strong>for</strong> Lebanon), 32 the age structure of<br />

IDPs is likely to follow that of <strong>Palestinian</strong>s inside Israel <strong>and</strong> in the OPT. 33<br />
